Sleep. School. Career. Choose one. How do you balance life? All of my life I have been told, “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” As an ambitious 20-something-year-old looking to make a name for herself in this world, this simply will not do!
I believe that if you want it you can have it, or maybe I’m just spoiled (Thanks, mom and dad). Right now I’m currently balancing a demanding internship, a hectic job, a time-consuming sorority, and of course battling the monster that is college all while trying to have a life and not break a sweat. At times, it’s not easy and I do drop the ball sometimes but “Professional Juggler” is not on my resume for a reason. I’ve learned over the years that you are going to mess up, but it’s what you do after that speaks volumes.
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger… and if you happen to die at least you died in the pursuit of your dreams (See? There’s a silver lining to everything). So, if you want to be like me and want to seem in control of life, keyword: seem, here are a few helpful hints and tips that I have picked up along the way.
Step 1: Get Hype. You can do anything you set your mind to! You’re the man! If anyone can do it, it’s you. Look in the mirror and give yourself a pep talk, go dance to your favorite song alone in your room, maybe achieve a small goal you’ve been meaning to do for a while (That pile of laundry that seems to be growing by the minute). You’ll feel accomplished and ready to take on something bigger! Keep going until you have reached Kanye level confidence.
Step 2: Go Do It. Now that you’ve got your blood pumping, and some clean underwear, go achieve something greater! This is the best part; it’s like riding a roller coaster. Taking all of that potential energy and dropping at a ninety-degree angle into the next phase of your life. Of course, you’re nervous the whole time and you screamed and probably cried but you did it and no one can take that from you.
Step 3: Breathe. Take a minute to enjoy what you have accomplished. You’re king of the wooooorld! But as soon as that dust settles and you start getting a little too comfortable with the way things are going, it’s time to start over with step one. Surprise, this isn’t a list it’s a cycle! Newton’s first law of motion states that objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force, so keep the momentum going! You wouldn’t want to defy gravity would you? Exactly, so get hype and get ‘er done.
These methods have a 100% success rate, mainly because I am the only one following them, but that’s not the point. The point is that if I can do it, so can you (And probably better). So for anyone afraid to take on more in life put your big girl pants on, do what needs to be done, and enjoy your cake because boy does it taste good.
